Selma, AL- Community members, elected officials, and candidates of Selma, AL will participate in the “HONK 4 Voting Rights Caravan” on Thursday, August 6th, 2020 to commemorate the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, encourage participation in the upcoming election, and call for increased voter protections.

The event will take place on the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, starting at 4:00 pm at the Dallas County Courthouse and travel through the neighborhoods of the Queen City to distribute voting rights information, instructions on how to register to vote, specific deadlines, and demands to increase voter protections across the country.

“Voting rights affect all of us.”, said Drew Glover, lead organizer of the event. “We have seen shortened voting hours, new barriers to registration, stricter voter identification laws, and the removal of polling places across the country - but especially in the South. Confirmed elected officials include Councilmembers Johnnie Leashore (Ward 6) and Michael Johnson (Ward 8). They are joined by mayoral candidates Turkesa Sullivan and Attorney Yusuf Salaam, as well as City Council candidates Lesia James, Landon Nichols, and Rev. Wil Jackson.
